Coccydynia refers to pain at the tailbone and may develop after a fall, prolonged sitting, childbirth, or without a clearly identifiable cause. While imaging can help rule out less common concerns such as fracture or infection, many people continue to experience persistent symptoms despite normal test results and standard treatments. In chronic cases, tailbone pain often exists alongside low back, pelvic, or hip discomfort and may persist for years when care is focused only on the painful area itself.
At The Essential Healing Center, we approach coccydynia by evaluating the body as an integrated system rather than isolating the tailbone alone. The coccyx is influenced by a complex network of ligaments, muscles, nerves, connective tissue, circulation, and the spinal cord’s dural system. Restrictions or strain elsewhere—such as the pelvis, sacrum, hips, lower extremities, breathing mechanics, or even the spine and neck—can place ongoing stress on the tailbone and perpetuate pain.
Through gentle, hands-on osteopathic care, we assess how these interconnected regions are functioning together. By identifying and addressing contributing patterns throughout the body, we aim to reduce unnecessary tissue strain, improve mobility and circulation, and support nervous system regulation. This whole-body approach allows care to be tailored to the individual, even when the source of pain is not located directly at the tailbone. Over time, restoring balance across multiple systems can help reduce pain, improve sitting tolerance, and support lasting comfort and function.
