Degenerative disc disease (DDD) refers to age- and load-related changes in the spinal discs that can affect cushioning and movement between the vertebrae. These changes are common and do not always cause symptoms—many people show significant degeneration on imaging with little or no pain. When discomfort, stiffness, or activity limitation does occur, it is often influenced by more than the disc itself. Conventional care may include medications, physical therapy, or surgical consultation, depending on severity and individual presentation.
At The Essential Healing Center, we recognize that pain associated with degenerative disc changes is frequently shaped by the health and mobility of surrounding tissues, including muscles, ligaments, connective tissue, circulation, and the nervous system. Restrictions or imbalance in these systems can increase mechanical strain on the spine and amplify symptoms—even when degenerative changes themselves are stable or longstanding.
Our approach uses gentle, hands-on osteopathic care to evaluate how the spine functions within the context of the entire body. Rather than focusing solely on imaging findings, we assess movement patterns, tissue tension, breathing mechanics, and nervous system regulation that may be contributing to ongoing discomfort. By improving mobility, reducing unnecessary tissue load, and supporting more efficient movement across interconnected regions, care is individualized to the patient’s unique presentation.
While degenerative disc changes cannot be reversed, addressing the surrounding contributors to pain can often help lessen symptoms, improve function, and support a safer, more comfortable return to daily activities—without relying solely on medications or invasive interventions.
